Key areas of focus
The Ombudsman for Older People works to ensure that the rights of older people are upheld and duly considered in legislation and societal decision-making. In carrying out this work, the Ombudsman pays particular attention to the situation of older people who are in a more vulnerable position than older people generally.
The Ombudsman closely monitors political and societal debate and actively participates in it from the perspective of the position and rights of older people.
The Ombudsman’s advocacy work focuses on the following issues:
- Reducing age discrimination and ageism
- Improving social welfare and healthcare services
- Supporting older people in a digital society
- Safeguarding the livelihoods of people on low incomes
- Promoting wellbeing and health
Methods of influence
The Ombudsman for Older People contributes to decision-making and the preparation of decisions in a variety of ways. For example, the Ombudsman issues statements on legislative proposals and other matters of relevance to older people. The Ombudsman also publishes press releases on current issues, issues statements independently or jointly with other organisations and stakeholders working to advance the position and rights of older people and gives interviews to the media.
The Ombudsman is frequently heard by parliamentary committees and meets members of the Government and public officials. Every four years, the Ombudsman submits a report to Parliament on the position of older people and the realisation of their rights. The report is then discussed in Parliament. The Ombudsman also submits an annual report for the Government addressing the most significant and topical issues concerning the position and rights of older people. In addition, the Ombudsman prepares thematic reports on specific areas of concern.
The Ombudsman works closely and meets regularly with a wide range of partners and stakeholders. In addition to organising meetings and events independently, the Ombudsman gives invited presentations and speaks at events and occasions organised by other stakeholders.
Across all areas of its work, the Ombudsman places particular emphasis on opportunities to meet older people in person and engage directly with them on current issues.
